Gy!be

saw the godspeed show tonight.
the lights were nothing special, in fact they stayed in one cue the whole show.
but the projections were amazing, and it was all done with 5 18mm reels.
no computers whatsoever.
i was very impressed.

its tech week

but i still have to be in class at 8:00
so i am not going to update

actually i have found the trick to dealing with presets...
i will explain tomorrow

Why presets fail

The Ion has a ton of interesting features, but at the top of the list is Presets. Presets basically record every value and reference that value. this is good because if the designer wants to us it as a go-to point for moving lights he can. It is however a double edged sword, for if the designer decides he wants to change the value in said preset, and when he asks to update the preset it will change the value in every cue that the preset is referenced in

frustrating to say the least.

No picture today as i am in tech and haven't had a chance to get out with my camera... first one is down in 3 days then i only have 5 more to go until the end of the semester.

Tech week

orginaly we were supposed to have an expression to make this show.
lucky for nick we got the Ion just in time.

i think this show would have been a completely different show if we still had the expression
The Ion is designed to deal with moving lights and cool effects
the expression was designed to deal with conventional lights...

I think we managed to get much closer to what Nick imagined with the Ion...

now here is a photo i took recently
It was taken for the show i am working on "Krapps last tape"
I like the Reflection personaly, i might Shop it to have the old Krapp in the reflection, unsure of that yet though...

programing on the Ion

spent the day Programing on the Ion for the first Cal rep show.
the Ion is prety sweet and Very Intuitive as i have said before, but i have discovered a few problems with it.
the first is that it does not (or if it does its difficult to figure out how) part times for multiple fixture values.
now for those of you that dont speak nerd. what it can do is move to separate lights at separate times in the same cue (EG. i want the special on the center to come up faster than the rest in cue 5)
what it cant do is make separate values of the same fixture move at separate times (I want the light to pan first then tilt? No Dice!)

and for those of you who are blissfully ignorant of the advances in lighting technology in the past 30 years they have lights that can move...
Seriously there have been moving lights used in concerts since the 80s....

Genesis took them on tour for the first time
it was supposed to be led zeppelin, but someone went and had an overdose...

Another semester just like the last

WE are about to jump in to the first tech week of the semester, and looking at the schedule and what i need to get done for classes it seems like this semester is another one were i dont get a chance to actually give 100% on any project.

Dont get me wrong, i know grad school isn't supposed to be a walk in the park, but it would be nice to have more than a weeks notice to work on something i can only do at school. to top it off i am at the theatre which is on the other side of the city all day every day this week, in tech, until 11 pm every night, and its a 2 hour bus ride to school from the theatre.
so it means i can only work on this project from 1 am to 10 am and i need to build a 3D model.
so basicly i am going to be exhausted and working on this project all week.

Heres a pretty picture of the sun....I believe the rainbow was caused by condensation turning to ice in the air still a neat effect

L.E.D Flurocent replacments

These are a good replacement for the ugly fluorescent light in my kitchen. the only problem is the price.
50$ each is a bit over the top, i dont want to shell out 100$ to make this fixture better since i will probably be living in this apt for another year.

an alternate solution seems to be getting color balanced florescent tubes, but they didn't have any in lowes when i went yesterday

Trip to LA

I got introduced to avid studios today.
Avid is The digital film editing software of choice for 98% of film and tv
but i am not too sold on it yet. the interface seems the same as what i am used to, but aperently if its not outputing to DVD or HD it only goes to quick time. although i think the person explaining it got it kind of confused...
i get to start working on it next week, so we will see if it is really the bees knees

Weekend post part 2

This post brought to you by missing Fridays post.

I took this photo When we rented a car for the day, at the end of our trip we went up to signal hill to view the city at night.
I took quite a few photos, but this one came out the best.
i like how the different types of light give such an array of different types of ugly yellow and magenta.
Also the Cars driving past give a very neat effect

would it make me a nerd if...

I have been thinking about picking up some more LED Fixtures but these ones would be to replace my conventional bulbs.
i think i need to look at the way they function and the quality of light the produce though.
since LED lights Mix to get to white it might be very different from the other tungsten halogen lights and if i still have the tungsten lamps it would throw off the color of the whole room
replacing all the lamps would be a bit too costly, but would save a bundle of money, and then there is still the problem of the fluorescent...

It wasnt the power supply

Since i moved in to my studio i have been trying to find ways to fix the lighting. i have been mostly uninspired, having little ideas, but never being able to afford to do them or have the time, whatever. the other day we were at Ikea and i noticed 4 packs of LED color changers were on special. so we picked up 3 packs, we just installed them over the bed and behind the fish tank, and they make the room look pretty cool. the only problem i cant reconcile right now is the spill from the florescent light in the kitchen. we tried putting Gels over the light, but it just made the kitchen darker. to me there is something to the quality of a fluorescent light that is very noticeable. it gives everything a septic and sterile feel, its like an office or a hospital, it doesnt make it feel like a home, and definitely does not work in the kitchen.
I wonder if there are any ways i could replace it with out having to remove the whole fixture...
