last Tech week of the semester day 4

Seriously.
I have a Cold, I live in southern fucking California.
it rained 4 times this year.
Although its probably because the theatre i am working on is an icy boat.
oh and its the end of the semester, and i am in tech week.
so what have i learnt this past week, well for one, some directors don't care for your design input, they just want you to do what they tell you. even though you are a designer and a part of the 'creative' team. and that once i am in the professional field these are the kind of directors i want to avoid, as a designer.

It hurts my heart that i haven't had a chance to take any pictures recently. my backpack usually has room for my camera, but now i need my external hard drive, video camera, and laptop when ever i am at the theatre so there's no room.
I suppose i could take some stills on the video camera, but it doesn't give me the control I have on my SLR
the reason i am so loaded with tech bits is because as the 'media content designer' i need to e able to work on the fly in the theatre.
here is one of the loops i made for the show. filmed and edited by me.
I am mostly pleased with it
I have a few more that might find their way up here if they aren't too big

quote of the day

I will love the light for it shows me the way.  Yet I will endure the darkness for it shows me the stars.  Og Mandino

is anyone else disappointed that we haven't traveled to the stars yet?

I had the best idea today

so i had this great idea, well actualy it was quite silly, but i think it could be fun....
why do they always happen at 3:30 in the morning before tech weekend.
I think thats how the get forgotten.
i wonder how many brilliant ideas wee lost in time because the person involved was too busy to take a note to think about it later.

Note taken.

its 3 AM

i have class in 4 hours and i am just finishing off work for one of my projects now, and for my media design.
yes i know no one said Grad school would be easy, but for Christ sake i just wish i had more time to work on my projects. instead of having to spend the whole semester working on other peoples shows and not get enough time to work on mine.
Who ever was responsible for scheduling this semester needs to learn how to read a calendar.

Bitching done.

Here is the instillation i did recently

why I like video design part 2

I think what i like most about vedio design and editing is the lack of paperwork.
as a lighting designer there is so much technical paperwork to do before you get to the actual hang and focus, and even after that there is still tons, with video the paperwork is story-boarding, and doing cut lists, then its artistic all the way to the end. while the cut lists are tedious it just doesnt compare to the grotesque amount of paperwork needed to be done to put up a show.

something for everyone

I am honestly too busy to even think right now.
i have no idea how i am going to get any work done outside of the productions i am working on. and the worst part is I even figured out a way for me to not have to work on Desire, but unfortunately that didn't fly, so now i am stuck being overworked and over stressed.
what did i learn today, when someone says to you "if you have any problems with this come talk to me" they actually mean " I don't care about your problems."

Lucky i still have some time to go out and take a nice photo

Why it sucks to be a media designer/ why its awesome pt 1

It has come to my attention that more and more theatrical companies want to add video projections to their performances. what with the cheaper prices of projectors and the ease of making footage on i movie or some other programs its plain to see how advantageous it is to use projections as a lighting and scenic element. there is also so much more that can be done with a projector Nowadays
the problem i have realized is, none of these people who want to ad a bit of video to spice up their productions realize how much work actually has to be put in to making the movies, or setting up the projections.
it gets even worse when those directors want "crazy special effects" added in. Its quite clear that video projections are becoming the "next big thing" in theatre. which is hilarious when you think about how long the projector has been around for.

But with all new technologies there is a big problem with intigrating it with somthing as archaiac as the theatre.
the best part about projections is they are both a lighting element and a scenic element. thus the people who are working with them can be either, or both or neither. the problem with that is because its so ambiguous, it often gets treated as a separate entity, then wen you get there you find out you're basically a custom gobo maker for the lighting designer.
often times you get brought in at the last minute as a band-aid to fix a problem, because the director forgets that the audience might have the slightest sliver of an imagination(this another problem i might get in to later)
Basically a distinction needs to be made, is your role as a member of the artistic team, or are you just a technician.
If you are a technician, then its probably ok to come in at the last minute to project water images on a floor and slave over an editing computer for 24 hours strait.
but if you are coming in as a member of the artistic team, the other designers and director need to remember that you have as much input on the creative process as they do.

to far away times

so...
I basicly Got screwed hard core this semester, but i realized something. Nay I learnt something.
what did I learn, you ask?
well
its just grades
and whether I get an A or a B it doesnt matter in the end, its not going to affect weather or not i will get a job.
i have made many connections here and i have at least a handful of people who will vouch for my abilities.
so why should i care about a stupid grade?

quote of the day

Ever since we crawled out of that primordial slime, that's been our unifying cry, "More light."  Sunlight.  Torchlight.  Candlelight.  Neon, incandescent lights that banish the darkness from our caves to illuminate our roads, the insides of our refrigerators.  Big floods for the night games at Soldier's Field.  Little tiny flashlights for those books we read under the covers when we're supposed to be asleep.  Light is more than watts and footcandles.  Light is metaphor.  Light is knowledge, light is life, light is light.  ~Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider

9 parts of desire

9 parts of desire had an amazing set and some fantastic lighting, its too bad the piece fell flat.
i think the subject matter is just something that's too distant for me, and probably most of the audience. i don't understand why this was chosen as a piece to be done at a university in southern California

Facts

Its interesting how quickly things become hectic, and i dont get a chance to update.
well it happens sometimes right?

I have been working on the Video for Pool of bethesda and i have to say i am prety pleased with myself.
this semester i have managed to teach myself After effects and adobe premiere.
Not bad, but very time consuming when you are in grad school
next up on the list of things to learn
Isadora

I will post some of my videos from the show soon, for now here is a shot of the Salton Sea
I love the way the light shimmers off the water
