last night in oslo

The show opened last night, and it was spectacular. My first big opera and it went really well. To all those Nay sayers who said “I wouldn’t be able to keep up with david” or “there’s no way you can track 70 moving lights” I say HA! I did it, And I did it well. Now I know what it means to be a good assistant, and what someone needs to do to be a good assistant. This also means I am going to expect a lot from my assistants. I mean after all if I can keep up with 78 moving lights, then anyone else should have no problems tracking the 5 in the QE for Night of the triceratops. There is much more to reflect on, but right now I need some sleep

tosca day 14

Day 14
Tomorrow is opening night. Today I watched from the balcony and took photos. I was trying to take photos of each cue, and found it supper difficult to figure out when some of the cues changed. A lot of the cues in this show are very subtle; I spoke to David about it afterwards, because I find the cue timing is one of the biggest problems I have.
It’s something that needs to be taken in to careful consideration, because there are certain moments that absolutely call for a well timed cue. For example the tedium at the end of act 1 finishes the music cuts so the lights should cut as well. If there was a fade it would look weird, but alternately the pull down to toscas famous aria in act two can be much more subtle. I think it would be a bit easier for a musical or an opera since you have the music to work with

tosca day 13

I find the use of texture in this show rather interesting, I recall that early on in the rehearsal process Kevin Knight (set and costume designer) commented on David’s use of the Upstage Profiles during act 1 and act 2
The Upstage profiles are used to create texture on the walls, in act one they cast an almost daylight looking light with a break up on the door and the SR walls roughly going in the direction of the window gobos, the light looks almost like the reflection of daylight off a marble floor, the lights are at a very low level so it’s very subtle but it adds a nice level of texture to the walls.
In act two the gobos are used in a similar fashion, but they are a much darker blue to match with the moonlight coming in through the windows.

this is going to go in my steal from David file. i think used subtly this could have a good effect on the mood of the scene, and my next show is going to be very moody, its a nice effect i think because its so subtle, but when its not there, (like it was for the first cues today) you kind of notice.

tosca day 12

Quote of the Day from Paul Curran
"its not about weather or not they(the audience) notice, its about meeting our standards as artists"

I sat in on a production meeting for the Rizalka which will be heading to Tokyo next year. And I finally met the head of lighting here. I find the way this theatre is organized is very interesting. Everything is departmental. It’s actually kind of frustrating, since it seems that there are no inter-department memos. Or after show reports, the theatre seems to function well enough, but I don’t understand why they don’t just sent out an email or a report. There also seems to be a large amount of people with positions that are basically just figure heads. That notwithstanding, I would still love to work in a place like this. And to work with someone like Paul, I really enjoy watching Paul work, he has a very good understanding of what he wants, and can communicate it to the singers in 6 different languages. Kevin Knight the set/costume designer is also fantastic. The coats Scarpias goons wear are amazing, and I’m not just saying that because I love that style coat
In general I find the strong dynamic between Paul Kevin and David very interesting, they all have a very similar approach, and I would love to see how they work together on a new production. (This show is a remount it was originally put on in Toronto)

Sneaking in a mini review

Arcade fire - The suburbs

i don't know, i just feel that Arcade fire has dropped the ball on this album.
Their last two albums were fantastic.
I am listening to it again right now as i write this and its just not doing it for me.
It just feels like almost every song is the same, it feels like there's no real variation to each track. i mean the first time i listened to it i couldn't even tell when it was a new song...
Now normally this would be a good thing, you know one song blending seamlessly to the next, but on the Suburbs its not blending, its repeating, well the lyrics change, but the beat remains the same.

the weird thing is all the things that i like about them are there: Melodic lyrics with Depth and power, amazing drum beats, Guitars battling with violins Cellos and pianos ect.
but it just feels like they didn't deliver all they could.
that being said, its still good, just not up on the same level as Funeral or Neon Bible.
also "Ready to start" and "Suburban war" are probably the best tracks on the album.

tosca day 11

Its hard to believe that i will be leaving this place in less than a week.
its actually got me very sad.
i think this experience here has been fantastic, and a great opportunity.

What i have found interesting, while watching this process, is Davids use of contrast and colors. In act 3 the whole upper part of the set is lit with a very low and cool blue back light. whereas the Jail is lit with a warm amber that's much closer to a candlelight. During Caverdosis aria the Main light is cast through the doors and through the bars giving this amazing look on the wall, and Caverdosi (if he doesnt stand right in the shadow created by the big part of the cell.)
The color contrast (Blue, Amber)is interesting, as it seems like this is the big color combination for most hollywood movies. but after discussing it with David, i realized, what other contrasting colors would you use pink and green? the Amber and Blue light are good contrasting colors and close to what you would get in reality(a blue night with amber streetlights why not)
Theoretically one can only have two color pallets while lighting, a red pallet or a green pallet and you should not mix between the two, unless its for a dramatic shift, because our eyes will be naturally drawn to the dramatic shift.
interesting food for thought.

Tosca day 9

I have picked up quite a few useful ideas from david while working here. i will delve deeper in to that later, but today i want to talk about the fiasco that has been plaguing the set dept for the past few weeks, and how it has kind of caused some problems for us.
Basic a big part of the act 3 stage did not arrive from Toronto, a set of bars that make the jail cell. now i am not going to get in to specifics, but when the rest of the set arrived the set team should have noticed there was a problem, but they did not. end result is we dont have the bars to the jail until today (and apparently they dont even fit)
so how does this slow down the Cuing?
well we can't accurately light act 3 with out them. also if these bars were in we would have been done with the cuing and just making small adjustments by now.
basically there was some missed communications and it wasted almost everyone's time.
it just goes to show how important communication and good management is.

Tosca Day 8

I might have mentioned before that the crew is awesome. Well let me go in to a bit more detail.

1stly this theatre is perhaps the most complex theatre I have ever seen in my life. The sage can lower 40 feet and a whole new stage can slide over it. There are also about 80 moving lights in the house. About 27 mac 2000 profiles, 25 mac 2000 wash and about 30 or so warps (I think there might be more warps)

And because the stage changes and a new stage rolls in the theatre can do change over’s, so for example, last Wednesday our set was moved aside so the national could come in and play a concert.

So why is this crew so awesome you ask? Well not only are they able to manage all this crazy technology, but they have fantastic attitudes and are always willing to put a bit extra in to help.

Also they want to learn too, Here they don’t use light write, but the Master electrician who is working with us asked me to show it to him if it might be a better way to take focus notes.

Tosca Day 7

Holy crap,
show opens in less than a week, (or is it a week)
working with david has been quite a good learning experience so far.
there are many techniques i will surly steal from him when i work on my shows, the first is a magic sheet specifically for moving lights. and not just were they are on the grid, but more were they are focused per act. i find that its a bit confusing to do it by act, so what i might do when i use it in my shows, is, i will do it by pallet. but then again on my show we will only be dealing with 5 moving lights, not 80, so it will be alto more manageable. but none the less when dealing with a show that wont have so many live moves it makes sense to organize it this way.
dont know why i never thought of it before...

Tosca Weekend!

Had a few days off (Two) spent most of yesterday hiking around the countryside on the other side of the fjord. it was really nice.
I found a place that will rent Kayak but they're a bit of a ways out, so next Sunday i have the day off i will probably go rent one and Kayak around the Fjords.
spent most of today fixing and updating paperwork and scripts.
even though i managed to get it together, i still fear i am missing something.
Next week is gonna be rough, 9 to 11 hour days.
But this is what i signed up for, also i do enjoy it.

I think i am really starting to enjoy working on Operas; the Grand sets, the beautiful music and
everything on such a large scale! perhaps i might have found my calling?
ah but the rock and roll life style still calls to me...
well we shall see how the next few weeks pan out.

Tosca day 6

Keeping pace here is A challenge and a half.
the amount of lights i need to track has now gone up to 78.
just to put it in to perspective the last show and the biggest show i worked on before this had 6 moving lights. so its been a bit of a jump.
but i am managing to keep up.
i have some time off in the next few days so i will use that time to fix up the paperwork and get prepared for the next few weeks.
there is plenty of work to do so i will have my hands full.
Remounting the show has proven to be a bit of challenge, the most recent hurdle was the death scene at the end of act 2 Scarpia had to die in a different spot, although to be fair, it didn't take much to fix the problem.
The back blue light seemed a bit too bright compared to the original images from the first production, but i believe David noticed this as he brought the levels of the back light down by a bit, and it added quite a bit to the atmosphere

Tosca day 5

the lights i must track are now up past 60!
Tomorrow we begin actually working through act 2 and cuing it.
I am a bit nervous since my computer has been having some problems, and if it goes out while i need to be tracking those 60 moving lights, well... im fucked.

tosca day 4

Still playing catchup

we built the first cue in act 3 today, the board data transfer did not work out the way we had hoped, (seems like it didnt work out at all) and we are going to have to build each cue from scratch. this isnt a huge problem, since we have photos from the previous show, so its just a matter of matching up and making adjustments.
Tracking 60 moving lights on the other hand is a bit of a nightmare.
It doesn't help that the notes on some of the groups are confusing, and erroneous.
the past few days fighting this cold, and keeping up and adjusting notes, i am barely able to keep my head above water.
I think, now that i have a bit more time and i am starting to feel better, i should be able to pick up the pace, i have some spare time and this should give me the chance to catch up.

Tosca day 3

todays update will be small,
not because theres little to say, but too much perhaps. and i still have a lot of catch up work to do
keeping up with David is very difficult, and it doesn't help that they're short a headset.
but i have started to pick up my pace. Hopefully i can keep up, but to do that i need to recompile all this paperwork, in two hours, so bigger post tonight, when everything is caught up.

Tosca Day 2

Slightly delayed due to the emergence of a bad cold.
when rehearsal started at 7, i came home and slept for 12 hours.
now i need to catch up on all the paperwork, that i should have been doing 12 hours ago.
I think the crazy flight combined with the stress i had to deal with back home let my immune system get down enough to let the sick in. i am starting to feel a bit better now though, so lets hope it will be cleared by tomorrow.

We finished focusing everything yesterday, today after the National concert we should start looking at cues and seeing how they translated over from the last show.
i am curious to see how this will effect the moving lights since the previous version had vl 1000s and this theatre has MACS.

Tosca Day 1

First of, from here on in this blog becomes much more technical.
Secondly i find it mildly annoying that Google auto translates everything to Norwegian.

Today we began the focus for Tosca. we started with the FOH systems. I think it went mostly, smoothly. there were a few times were i was struggling to keep up with David and the crew as he quickly Hoped from light to light, but i think as i get back in to the swing of things i will definitely pick up the pace. Despite working on 10 shows in the past year i only actually assisted on one of them, so i fear my focus charts and experience as an assistant is not up to the level it should be, but working here is giving me the chance to make leaps and bounds in my experience.

Although this show is a remount, i think there are going to be many changes to the Cues as the instruments here are much more powerful than the ones in the previous show (750W to 2.5kW on most of the conventional lights) Also i believe the wattage of the bulbs might have an effect on the difference between the warm and the cool systems.

Did i mention the crew was awesome, well let me say it one more time, awesome
And the space is beyond the scope of any theatre i have been in, Moving decks that go down 40 feet, multiple black-box rehearsal spaces/theatres, its own computer lab, a scene shop the size of a city block. i could write about 10 pages on the equipment and technology they have here, but i think its a bit more important to finish my EOD

If anything can go wrong, it will

So i made it to Oslo after a very long flight (Flights).
In flight movie was 500 days of Summer, it made me sad, but it was a good movie.
Oslo is surprisingly warm for a city that is as far north as Greenland.
i ran in to a few snags along the way but thankfuly they all worked out and now i am in my posh apartment drinking scotch!
Tomorrow we focus!

Dont stop me / The Gun is good

so i just bought the new orbital single (for those of you who dont know, Orbital is one of my favorite bands) and i must say i am a bit disappointed. Perhaps i had set my expectations a bit too high. i mean they are one of my favorite bands, and they are also the godfathers of techno, and there was about a 5 year hiatus.
so yes i expected gold, and i think what i got was silver, it was nicely polished, but it was still silver.

so let me explain.
Orbital has released two singles; dont stop me, and the gun is good. hopefully they will be releasing a full album soon and i will be able to hear it in all its glory, but untill then i have these two tracks as a bit of a teaser (i hope). I fully believe that these two tracks will take Place in the Album and hearing them out of context is perhaps why i do not enjoy them as much. (one thing i love about later Orbital albums is their fluidity )

lets start with dont stop me. its good, but i feel it borrows a bit to much from the Daft punks Robot rock style intro, it builds in to a very orbital style sound(You know it when you hear it) but one thing that deters me from this track is there is no real crescendo, the song builds up, Bridges, then Builds up, but i feel like it cuts short at the end.

how about the gun is good? Now this is very orbital, right down to the fluid beats and the Quotes from the mostly obscure movie(Time bandits) although the movies are getting a bit less obscure(Or perhaps i am become more of a film nerd?) but don't hold that against them.
and this track really Grew on me, i had to listen to it a few times, but yeah, it rocks.

So in conclusion, i am waiting to listen to the whole album before i pass final judgment on either of these tracks, but if you need a fix before the album get the gun is good then wait for the full album to see were don't stop me fits(i bet its track 1)
